The Second Tuesday Fiction Group meets Tuesday to discuss “Running the Rift” by Naomi Benaron. A gifted athlete, Jean Patrick Nkuba sprints over the thousand hills of Rwanda and dreams of becoming his country’s first Olympic medal winner in track. But he is a Tutsi in a world that has become increasingly restrictive and violent for his people. As tensions mount between the Hutu and Tutsi, he holds fast to his dream that running might deliver his people from the brutality around them.
The Just the Facts Group meets June 25 to discuss “The Sinner’s Grand Tour” by Tony Perrottet. Sex and travel have always been intertwined and never more so than on the classic Grand Tour of Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, the continent is littered with salacious remnants of that age of secret boudoirs, notorious dungeons and forbidden artifacts. Perrottet sets off to discover a string of legendary sites and relics that are still kept from public view.
Both groups meet from 6 to 8 p.m. and are facilitated by Brenda Eng or Joy Vogelgesang. Attendees are asked to read the book and be prepared for discussion. Bring a pupu or beverage to share. For more information, call Brenda or Joy at 324-0350.
